ESTONIA - Having gained independence in 1918, after being ruled over by
it's neigbours for centuries, Estonia fell prey to the Soviet Union
after the Second World War. After almost 50 years of occupation, Estonia
once again regained it independence in August 20th, 1991, in the midst
of the coup and the breakup of the Soviet Empire. Today Estonia, while
having a medieval history from ancient times, is a modern nation which
has membership in NATO and is part of the European Union.
Just days prior to becoming an independent nation once again, on the
17th of August 1991, the Estonian Christian Pentecostal Church was born.
Leading up to this ACOP Missionaries, Märt and Alta Vähi with their
family joined together with PAOC Missionaries Allan and Rael Laur from
Canada and AOG Missionaries Harry and Jackie Leesment from Australia and
their families, all having Estonian roots, moved to Estonia to begin
this new work.
Today, this work continues under national leadership with over 31
officially registered congregations including a number of Russian
speaking congregations and other points of outreach, Bible School,
prison ministry, radio station, world leading deaf ministry, missionary
outreach. Today the Estonian Christian Pentecostal Church is one of the
leading churches in Estonia and has membership in the Estonian National
Council of Churches and is an affiliate of the ACOP. www.eknk.ee
Meantime, Missionaries Märt and Alta Vähi continue to mentor and serve
in Estonia.
For the last several years they are pioneering and leading a
much needed recovery ministry to those in drug and alcohol addiction -
the Village of Hope. www.villageofhope.net This outreach, built as a
village to those in addiction, was pioneered together with their son,
Andrew and his wife Erica Vähi. After serving in Estonia for the last
five years establishing the Village of Hope in Estonia, Andrew and Erica
and son Evan have moved to Canada, as missionaries, to start a Village
of Hope in New Brunswick.
