I recently read Rob Bell’s latest book – Sex God - a provocative title to say the least. (Don’t worry, my wife gave me the book.) Bell’s book explores what he calls the endless connection between sexuality and spirituality – it’s worth a read.
In the book, Bell relates an anecdote from his own life. When he was 5 years old he made his father a Christmas gift from a piece of old drain pipe glued to a sundry collection of stones. On a recent visit to his father’s office, Bell discovers that the drain pipe work of art is still on display – 30 years later! Bells says we all know why he kept it, because “How you treat the creation reflects how you feel about the creator”.
Obviously there is an environmental application – how we treat the environment is a reflection about how we feel about the Creator. However, the application Bell makes is that when we mistreat, objectify, or neglect fellow human beings – these actions are against God. Because how you treat the creation reflects how you feel about the Creator.
When we allow unborn babies or the aged to be mistreated, when women are objectified through pornography and when the poor and homeless are neglected – it is a reflection of how we feel about the Creator.
Jesus said – 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' (Mt 25:40)
I welcome your thoughts and comments.

| That agrees with the greatest commandment, the one in which Christ clarifies what the act of love actually is, i.e. the summation/equivalent of the Law and the Prophets: that 'in all we do we are to treat others the way we would like to be treated', Mt. 7:12; Lk. 6.31 (cf Jn. 15:13), precisely what Christ demonstrated completely. |

I don't agree with everything Rob Bell says or writes -- but I do find he provokes me to think. Thanks for the comment! |
