Never Alone

Wes Mills Jun 7, 2007 10:43 AM

A friend of mine sent me the following story:

There is a legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage? His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone.

He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own.

The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blows the grass and earth, and shakes his stump, but he sits stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he can become a man.

Finally, after a horrific night the sun appears and he removes his blindfold. It is then that he discovers his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

We, too, are never alone. Even when we don't know it, our Heavenly Father is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us.

Hebrews 13:5 “…God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’"

Regardless of what you are facing today, our Heavenly Father promises that He will be with us.

Love the analogy ... sometimes I feel like that's my story. Except for me, I feel the pride of having survived the time of testing and the joy of the dawn's sun breaking onto my blindfolded face; I take off the mask, hop off the stump and wander back to my tribe's camp ... only to find out that they moved in the night and the whole episode was a ruse to give them time to ditch me. Whew, glad to hear it's not like that.

I believe this excellent illustration is also applicable to our prayer life. Often we do not feel anything when we pray but that does not mean God is not there listening. Faith presses on based on the promises of the Word God is listening. In due time we see the results.

Mark 16:15:

That is an intersting application!
