Reflections on Father's Day

Wes Mills Jun 17, 2007 9:04 PM

Today is Father’s Day, and as a son, I send a card and gift to my Dad, as a Dad I received cards and gifts from my sons – all pretty standard for Fathers Day. However, I also did something a little different – I gave my sons cards – because without them I wouldn’t be celebrating Father’s Day!

In the cards I gave to my sons I highlighted the character traits that I most admire in them, and the reasons that I am proud to call them my sons. I think the cards meant something to them, but for me the act of writing the cards was an important reminder, that as fathers we need to regularly encourage our children – no matter how old they are.
In so doing we follow the example of our Heavenly Father, who on at least two different occasions, in a voice from heaven said “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”

I welcome your thoughts and comments.

Your loving gesture to your sons is much like the greeting card and written invitation God the Father sent us years ago. God must have thought about his similar act of love toward us when he watched you do this for your sons. What is the written greeting card, invitation and love writing God sent us expressing His love to us? The Bible. I often used this illustration for children in churches when I was ministering in churches. It always related to them: the Bible is a love card and invitation from God telling us how much He loves us and inviting us to his great celebration one day to be with him.
